„Lokomotywa” Bloggers’ Non-Adult Book Choice Award is a non-profit initiative co-founded in 2018 by a group of Polish bloggers who review and promote children’s and young adult’s literature. Each year they nominate a selection of 60 books for public on-line voting. The main criterion of choice is that the books must be published in Polish (although it does not have to be the language of their first publication) between December of the previous year and November of the current one.
The nominations fall into 10 categories:
- Text (in early editions also known as Fiction);
- Non-fiction;
- Visual;
- Comic;
- Translation;
- A to Z (aka „The Total Book”).
Votes are collected on-line in late January and the winners are announced at the beginning of the following month.
The word „Lokomotywa”, used as the name for the project, is the Polish name for a steam engine locomotive. The choice was a reference to both a famous Polish childrens’ rhyme by Julian Tuwim (1894–1953) as well as the fact that the nominees and the winners are those that set high standards and direction for the whole childrens’ literature community. The logo was designed by Tomasz Samojlik, a renowned author of wildlife-themed comic books and winner of Lokomotywa's first edtion's best comic book award.
